Hey Pete,

Interesting write-ups! You come across very well!

The final quotation from one of your soldiers about being a "thinking warrior" is the most interesting to me. That sense of strategy and understanding comes across most strongly in all of your blogs.

Thanks for the links!

Best,
Chris

Hey Pete,

What an event to commemorate your return to blogging!

You describe it with such order and precision, but I imagine it must have been havoc and madness while you were in it.

Best,
Chris

Interesting point about "change." It is hard to figure out what, if anything, is so different about "me" after 15-months away. Part of the problem is that my experiences in Afghanistan and any ideas that were generated from them just aren't that relevant to much that happens here. That is, 99% of what I need to do or say in daily life doesn't depend at all on me having spent time in Afghanistan to perform, thus change or difference has very little chance to manifest itself. Don't know if that works for you, or is the whole answer, but it is a start.

Peter,

Just read all the recent posts and one of the Stars & Stripes articles. Makes a civilian like myself a little sheepish about my peaceful and comfortable life, about which I nevertheless complain.

I'm also reminded of my harrowing six months at MD Anderson and all of the scares and problems that followed. You would think such experiences change you. Not in my experience.

Congratulations on a job well done.

Hey Pete,

I looked you up to find out the latest in your continuing saga--or should I say, "bloga"?--and I found a review you did a couple of years ago. Good job on Buda's Wagon!

Best,
Chris

Hey Pete,

I'm sorry your leave was so short. I'm going to a conference next week, and I was going to send you a post card. I'll do it anyway--something to look forward to when you're on leave again!

I was surprised by your pictures. For some reason, I assumed that you and your troops lived in communal tents like in M*A*S*H*, or set up one-person tents with sleeping bags inside. Shows you what I know about military bivouacs--zilch! Until now!

I'll have to add "stay dry" to my usual "stay safe"!

Best,
Chris

Chris, Jon: My harshest critics, and by far the better craftsmen, posting straight from the American heartland.... It was always my ambition to write the best critique of Martin Van Buren in the military blogosphere, and it warms my icey heart to think I might have come close.

Thanks for your love and support--no trip to Indiana this time around, unfortunately, but next fall/winter for sure.

Hey Pete,

That has got to be one of the more pointed (yet fair, I think) critiques of Martin Van Buren in all of the military blogosphere. It's good to know that your expertise on all things 19-C American is still serving you well. Any chance that you're going to be swinging by the Bloomington area while you're at home on leave? I imagine that they're keeping you pretty busy here on the home front as well.
